Okay so I thought this was surprising enough to warrant OOC discussion. The latest MOTD says that there are some big changes coming along with the full implementation of the justice system. That's cool. In advance of these changes the MOTD tries to clarify what counts as a crime. Noting that violence is typically crime-worthy the MOTD goes on to note "there are exceptions." Many of these are cases where we would all expect that violence would go unpunished, e.g. against the arachnids and sewer rats. But then the MOTD says "Wanted criminals are fair game..."

Now the only wanted criminals I know of are other PCs. Is this an indication that, for the first time there will be PvP violence within the city?

Hi Colin, apologies for the ambiguity. The "wanted criminals" referred to in the MOTD are NPCs which will enable the Bounty Hunter role. [Edit: I've edited the MOTD to make this more clear.]

There will one day be PvP violence, in the gladiatorial Colisseum in NE. Players will be able to challenge each other in this one fashion.

Is PvP violence something which interests y'all, or is it a feature you'd rather not see?

Actually I don't have much of an interest in seeing it outside of entirely consensual forums like the Arena. I was surprised by this MOTD because my impression was, as you confirmed here, that there were no plans for PvP violence outside the Arena. Thanks for the clarification!

I think that PvP would complicate things too much outside of a specialised arena. Plus it kind of goes against the ethos of the game.

Heh, I was entertaining the idea of advocating player stealing. I think player killing is nasty given the permanence of death in TC, but maybe (maybe) player stealing would be interesting. I dunno, anyone else?

Agreed. Player killing's a horrible idea, but player stealing interests me. Thieves in TC have had a hard time of it, and many people I know with higher level thieves have simply stopped playing them for fear of death etc. But now the justice system is looking so great, then why not be able to steal a coveted item from another player, or break into their house and have a good old rummage about the place? I think it would make life very interesting.

I disagree. I mean, of course it would make life interesting. But I worked hard for my first antigravity canteen, and I would have been p-r-e-t-t-y upset if it had gotten stolen. (Wait, actually I still would...)
Plus, with NPCs there's a certain amount of restraint involved. 'Hmm, if I try to pickpocket this guy and fail, he might turn around and stab me in the face.' Since there's no PVP violence in general, though, there's nothing to prevent one from attempting to steal from any PC that holds still long enough.
(This comment would have been shorter if I had said: "I agree with the points on the "What makes TC different from other MUDs?" page.)

The problems cited on that page, and by you here, have to do with newbies or low-level players being discouraged by having high-level players steal from them. What if we found some compromise position? Maybe a character of level X can steal from other characters, but only so long as the other characters are of level X or higher. Does that sound reasonable?

Oh I agree with this, it shouldn't be possible to lockpick doors to player houses. By "stealing" I meant strictly stealing from a players inventory.
