Frequently-Asked Questions
Why the hefty plugin download?
Well -- <sigh> -- you see... In Technology Land there are
these horrible monsters called Proprietary Solutions.
Tech warriors like us have to fight them at every turn. They're
aggressive and nasty and really out to get you. There's a certain
manufacturer of mean monsters up in Redmond, WA who are really,
really skilled at launching these beasties into the world. Most
unfortunately, they have their own version of Java, which isn't
guaranteed to be completely compatible with the one
from JavaSoft. An evil critter indeed. So we have to use the plugin,
that is the standard, JavaSoft Java, to ensure that TriadCity will
work the same way on every different browser platform, from whatever
monster-maker, er, that is, software company.
Why use Java at all? Basically because it's necessary to continually
update players' screens in "real time". We could sorta kinda
do this by refreshing your browser window every few seconds, but that's
horrifically ugly, and it takes a long time. Or we could leave it to you
to reload your browser when you feel like it...but of course your
character could be plenty dead if you forget. So, the little Java
applet is real-time, a light download, and reasonably user-friendly.
Here's the good news: you only have to download that rotten
plugin once, then you're done.
