Mark Phillips, CyberBard

Well, OK, "CyberBard"'s a joke. Mark's real SmartMonsters title is "Poobah". Er, that is, Lead Technology Guy. Something like that.

Mark's a somewhat semi-known writer of arty-farty experimental fiction. While TriadCity's his main effort, his other writing has been widely published online.

Mark's believes that multi-user role-playing games are a form of literature, halfway between Pynchon and Star Trek's Holodeck. His goal for SmartMonsters is to contribute to the definition of the medium's characteristic forms and vocabularies. Try saying that ten times fast: if you succeed, you'll sound a lot like Mark does.

To pay the rent he's a technology guy, currently working for a software company in Silicon Valley.

Our Executive Staff:

"Characters inside fictional worlds are also capable of sustaining propositional attitudes and projecting possible worlds. Eco calls these possible-worlds-within-possible-worlds subworlds; Pavel prefers the term narrative domains. It is the tension and disparity among various characters' subworlds, and between their subworlds and the fictional "real" world, that formed the basis of modernist and, before that, realist epistemological poetics."
