The easiest option by a lot is to have your pet log out and log in with you. So, once you've adopted a pet, the two of you are now for all purposes a set. It goes where you go, including offworld.

How do you feel about it?

Sounds great!

What would happen to the pet if/when the character dies? would it be passed on to the heir? or would the hostile npc's attack the pet also? could the pet have defensive abilities?

OOOOH i'd love to have my own attack dog!

Yah the pet would be a character like yours or NPCs, all the same abilities, except you'd be controlling it with an "order" command or similar.

We'd need to think through how pets and violence interact. I'd think a loyal pet would leap into any scrape you find yourself in, to defend you. But we'd have a lot of dead pets that way, unless you have Rescue and can protect it. Maybe that's what we want? If you've got a pet you have to be extra careful about getting into physical conflicts?

Also we'll want advanced pets to have a psychic bond with their owners. So you can send your pet exploring where you don't want to go - or won't fit. Similar to Astral commands but subject to the normal laws of movement. Essentially every high-level pet would be a familiar. Something like that.

This sounds like fun!
Maybe there should ne a pet loyalty drift or something like that.

Few things to think about.

1. the pet attributes should be tied to the characters.
2. Every character who has a pet should know the RESCUE skill. ( for example malopaths cant learn it anymore)
3.maybe the pet skills could also tie to the role of the character. (A healer has a puppy who would give healing kisses.. lol. Thief dog would grab some dinars)

Okies Pets are FYI slowly in progress. There's a lot of infrastructure 'cos you'd want puppies to grow up, and stuff like that. At advanced levels certain Roles would treat their Pets like familiars, where a Magician say could send their cat to go exploring and see through the Cat's eyes, like Astral Projecting but physical. At the moment Android and subscriptions are the top priorities but this is inching forward.
