There's now a way to write messages and leave them for other players inside the game world. I've been helping test. I can understand how useful this will be! But, the messages don't live on after server reboots, or if you have them in your inventory and log out. This is deliberate, although I haven't yet figured out why.
You can buy pens, paper, envelopes and "courier pouches" in all three thirds.
