Getting Started With Midgaard

Before you can login to the game, you may or may not need to complete some easy preparatory steps. It depends whether you're visually impaired, or not; and on whether you use your phone or a desktop computer.

Sighted players can happily use any of our GUI clients. We have clients for Android, iOS, and Web. Choose any or all, you're good to go.

Visually impaired players can also happily use our iOS or Android clients. On iOS with VoiceOver on, you'll still type to enter commands, but output from the game will be read to you. Similarly on Android, with TalkBack on. Many VI players add a Bluetooth keyboard for convenience.

Visually impaired players using a desktop computer will want to install a standard bit of gaming software called a MUD client. That's an all-text application that integrates with your screen reader. There are several free ones for both Windows and Mac; we've posted settings for the major ones below. We've noted though that many of our blind players prefer VIPMud. It's not free, but it's designed specifically for accessibility. Once you've chosen and installed one, point it to midgaard.smartmonsters.com port 9195, or port 9194 if you're not using a secure connection. That's it!

Mobile

Our native Android and iOS apps are designed for simple, intuitive use. Features:

• Simple, straightforward graphical interface with minimal controls.
• All major game and account functions available in-app, without having to exit to the Web site.
• Graphical displays of character state: health, energy, attributes, skills, etc.
• Manage chat channels, natural language parsing, and other features.
• Character maintenance: health, energy, experience, Skills.
• On iOS, store login creds in the Keychain; share them among devices via iCloud.
• Access the Players' Guide, FAQ, Message of the Day and other website resources directly within the app.
• Create new characters.
• Fully mobile: happy over WiFi or cellular data.
• Type commands with the virtual keyboard, or use your Bluetooth keyboard for maximum ease.
• Blind-friendly: works great with VoiceOver and TalkBack.
• Female-friendly: we've had more women players than men for over 20 years.
• Bandwidth-friendly: no broadband required — uses minimal cellular data.
• Very friendly community — even our bulletin-boards are safe!
• Thousands of players from all over the world.
• Guest login w/limited features if you just wanna check it out.

Web

Our JQuery / HTML5 client works with any browser. It gives you full control over all game functions, and integrates seamlessly with our Web site for account management.

MUD

Use your favorite MUD client and be fully old-school:
    — Secure connections: midgaard.smartmonsters.com port 9195.
    — Insecure connections and vanilla telnet: port 9194.

Telnet

From your command prompt, type "telnet midgaard.smartmonsters.com 9194". This is an insecure connection — so don't do this from a coffee café or other public Internet connection. But, it works just fine. And, it's just like the old days.
