Subtle new limits have been implemented to the number of simultaneous characters players will want to have at any one time.

Ten characters are free. More than ten will degrade the Skills and die rolls of all of all of your characters. The more characters, the deeper the impact.

Dead characters do count against the limit.

SO: delete your unused characters, hold your total count of characters to ten or less, and notice no differences at all.
