How to Play TriadCity
The TriadCity Players' Guide
Pets
Pets in TriadCity are, much like most other things in TriadCity, pretty much whatever you want them to be.
Pets can be your bodyguards, Rescuing you if you're attacked. They themselves can attack on command, allowing you to create private armies if you wish. They can be your magical familiars. They can be your friends and companions. Or something else you're free to invent.
However, Pets are nontrivial responsibilities. Because they remain inside the game world when you log out, you have to ensure they have supplies of or access to food and drink; and you'll want to leave them in safe locations, where they won't be attacked without you there to protect them. There are pet parks in the game world, where there's water and safety from violent or magical harm. But, as public spaces, you can't guarantee there will always be food there. The safest strategy while you're away is to leave Pets inside your Player House along with a significant supply of appropriate nourishment. Totally up to you, of course.
Pets grow, over time, from stray infants to full adulthood. They learn Skills just as Players do, and, unlike Players, they respond to the commands of their owners.
You acquire a new Pet by Adopting a stray. In time, we'll implement buying and selling mature Pets, so that an economy of trained, specialized, ready-to-get-to-work Pets can evolve. As of this writing, that's not in yet, but, watch this space.
Pets who are no longer wanted can be Abandoned by their owners. But note, this may well have consequences, particularly among citizens of the NorthWestern Third, many of whom are passionately protective of animals. Like Adoption, Abandonment is not a trivial decision.
Pets require specific foods. Dogs, Cats and Reptiles are carnivores. Birds and larger mammals are omnivores. This is likely to evolve as more Pet types are added.
Trained Pets can be commanded via multiple options, depending on the level of harshness an owner intends. Command and Order are peremptory; Cue is more collaborative. Owners also, intriguingly, develop psychic bonds with their Pets, allowing them to give silent instructions via the Tell command. This can include the instruction to come to the owner's current location, across the entire game world if necessary.
Your Pet belongs only to you. It'll ignore orders from anyone else. You can have as many Pets as you're able to care for.
Pets will die if not looked after. Pet neglect may again be considered extremely negatively by certain NPCs. Note that if your Pet is in danger of death from thirst or hunger you'll be prompted by email to return to the City to look after them. This is not a setting you can override.
These are the mechanics, and the parameters. The rest is up to you. You'll grow your Pets into Warriors, Magicians, companions, or simply friends. Your choice.
