The most users ever online error seems to have happened right at the time the old forum merged with the new one. That is my guess at the origin at least.

FYI this was a bug where the forum cache wasn't clearing itself, so that every time someone opened a new page it was counted as a new visitor. it was related to the way we use "autoscaling" to add and remove server instances depending on traffic. We've changed the caching technology and the glitch seems definitely fixed. Leaving the 16k count 'cos it looks cool.
