Discovered that certain game items increase your maximum energy. The one I found is the pair of "Comfortable Running Shoes" -- I think that's what they're called -- which you can buy from the shoe store in Black Plaza Mall, 2nd floor. You still have to rest up to get to maximum energy, but having the higher max limit is sure helpful for exploring.
