I think I've noticed that all the merchants accept "ATM card" payments directly from your bank account. If this is right, there's no reason to carry cash. Cash is heavy, it counts against your ability to carry other weight, and, if I've read the notices about pickpockets right, it can be stolen. Looks like a good strategy is to deposit all your cash and travel without it.
