USE:

  1. Use form one when there's no possible ambiguity. In the example, there's only one bottle in your inventory, and only one basin in the current room.
  2. Use form two when more information is needed to interpret the command — that is, there's more than one possible receptacle and source by the same names to which the command could be applied. In the example, there's a blue bottle, a red bottle, etc. in your inventory; a big basin, a small basin, etc. in the room.
  3. Use form three when more information is needed to interpret the command — that is, there's more than one possible source by the same name to which the command could be applied. In the example, there's a blue bottle, a red bottle, etc. in your inventory. Note that you don't type the parentheses, which are shown here to demonstrate the logic which pour will attempt to employ.
  4. Use form four when more information is needed to interpret the command — that is, there's more than one possible receptacle by the same name to which the command could be applied. In the example, there's a big basin, a small basin, etc. in the room. Note that you don't type the parentheses, which are shown here to demonstrate the logic which pour will attempt to employ.
  5. Use form five when there are many instances of <source> in your inventory, and you want to pour one of them in particular.
  6. Use form six when there are many instances of <receptacle> in the room, and you want to pour from one of them in particular.
  7. Use form seven when there are many instances of <source> in your inventory, many instances of <receptacle> in the room, and you want to use particular ones of each.

The source which you pour from must be in your inventory, not the room. Conversely the receptacle must be in the room.
